    Business writing is one of the most common LLM use cases, yet few comparisons focus on it specifically. We created 200 real-world business writing tasks across five categories: email communication, report generation, proposal writing, marketing copy, and internal documentation. Each output was rated by 20 business professionals on clarity, tone, accuracy, and usefulness.

    Both Claude 4.6 and GPT-5 are excellent writers, but their styles differ in ways that matter for professional contexts.

    Email Communication

    For professional emails, Claude 4.6 was preferred 61% to 39%. Claude's emails were rated as more appropriately toned, more concise, and less likely to include unnecessary filler. GPT-5's emails were occasionally flagged as 'trying too hard to be friendly' or 'slightly too formal for the context.'

    Claude's advantage is most pronounced in sensitive communications—delivering bad news, declining requests, or navigating office politics. Its nuanced understanding of professional social dynamics produces emails that feel genuinely human-written.

    Reports & Documentation

    For technical reports and documentation, results were nearly split: GPT-5 was preferred 52% to 48%. GPT-5 excels at structuring long documents with clear hierarchies, tables, and data integration. Claude produces more readable prose but sometimes under-structures long documents.

    For data-heavy reports with tables and charts, GPT-5's ability to format complex data clearly gives it an edge. For narrative reports where storytelling matters (annual reviews, strategic assessments), Claude's writing quality shines.

    Proposals & Persuasive Writing

    GPT-5 won the proposal category 57% to 43%. Its proposals were rated as more persuasive, better structured, and more likely to address potential objections preemptively. GPT-5 seems to have a stronger internal model of 'what decision-makers want to hear' and structures arguments accordingly.

    Claude's proposals were rated as more honest and balanced—pros and cons were presented more fairly. Depending on your organization's culture, this could be an advantage or disadvantage.

    Marketing Copy

    For marketing copy (landing pages, ad copy, social media), GPT-5 leads 59% to 41%. GPT-5 generates catchier headlines, more varied CTAs, and more emotionally engaging copy. Claude's marketing copy is competent but sometimes reads as too measured for contexts that need energy and excitement.

    For brand voice consistency, Claude is actually better—it maintains a specified tone more reliably across multiple pieces. For campaigns requiring consistent voice across dozens of assets, Claude's reliability matters more than GPT-5's occasional brilliance.

    Verdict

    Claude 4.6 is better for emails, sensitive communication, and brand-consistent content. GPT-5 is better for proposals, marketing copy, and data-heavy reports. The overall scores are close enough that both are excellent choices. The optimal approach: use Claude for correspondence and GPT-5 for persuasive and structured content.
